The PlayStation Portable follow-up to Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, released in October 2006. Like Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories is a prequel that returns to a familiar location from an earlier mainline GTA game—specifically Vice City, the setting of 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Vice City Stories is set in 1984, two years before the events of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The game follows a new protagonist named Vic and explores the downfall of the Vance brothers, foreshadowing the events that lead directly into Tommy Versetti's takeover in the original Vice City. Rockstar designed Vice City Stories to expand on Liberty City Stories' success by adding features like swimming and empire building, along with a more emotionally driven narrative.
Like its predecessor, Vice City Stories was initially a PSP exclusive before being ported to PlayStation 2, iOS, Android, and Fire OS. The game was well-received and commercially successful, continuing Rockstar's strategy of delivering full-scale Grand Theft Auto experiences on handheld platforms.
